A man has been charged with murder after allegedly setting his father on fire.

Emergency services were called to a home on Wargon Crescent, Glenmore Park, following reports of a fire about 12.50am on Thursday.

Police officers attending the scene “located the body of a man in front of a partially alight property,” a police statement said.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, is believed to be aged 64 and was found on the property’s driveway.

Police said the 64-year-old man had multiple injuries across his body, including significant burns.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the fire.

The victim’s 36-year-old son was arrested after he was found inside a car on Parkes Avenue, Werrington about 6.45am on Thursday.

“The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries before he was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard,” a police statement said.

“After being released from hospital, the man was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was (charged with) murder.”

Police said the 36-year-old man was well known to the authorities, but his criminal history was unrelated to the man’s father.

Nepean Police Area Commander Superintendent Trent King said inquiries into the circumstances of the older man’s death were ongoing.

He said the 64-year-old man lived at the property, but the 36-year-old did not.

“There appears to have been an altercation between the two parties there, following a break and enter into the premises — the front door was forced,” he said.

“An accelerant appears to have been used … however there’s no further information at this stage around what actually occurred within the premises.”

The 36-year-old man was refused bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on Friday.
