A man has died in his car after leading police on a wild pursuit from Queensland into NSW, sparking a critical incident investigation.

The man, believed to have been armed with a gun, first drew police attention at Robina on the Gold Coast shortly before midnight on Saturday.

Queensland police tried to detain him when they spotted his vehicle on West Burleigh Rd, but he evaded officers and took off towards the Gold Coast Highway.

NSW officers received reports that the man had driven across the border at about 1am on Sunday.

Police tracked down the man’s Ford utility on Sexton Hill Drive at Banora Point, giving chase when he failed to stop as directed.

Officers pursued the man through several nearby suburbs and deployed road spikes twice at South Murwillumbah, with the driver continuing for almost 26km before finally coming to a stop at an embankment on Kyogle Rd, Kunghur.

Police surrounded the Ford and negotiators were brought on scene to speak to the man.

However as officers approached the vehicle, they found the man unconscious inside.

He was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

Police say he is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be a 25-year-old man from Queensland.

A firearm was seized from the man’s vehicle for forensic examination.

“A critical incident team from Richmond Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Their investigation will be subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Investigations are ongoing.
