A diver has been injured after being bitten by a shark during a morning swim off Tasmania’s Bruny Island.
Emergency crews were called to Coal Point at Adventure Bay shortly after 9am on Saturday following reports a man had been attacked.
Tasmania Police said the victim, understood to be a 31-year-old man, suffered a bite to his forearm.
“About 9.10am, police received reports that a person had been bitten by a shark on the forearm,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.
“The person is receiving medical treatment at the scene for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
“We’d like to thank the public for their assistance at the scene.”
Authorities have warned swimmers and divers in the area to remain cautious following the encounter.
A Tasmanian Government warning said the shark involved was estimated to be about two metres long.
“The attack … involved a shark estimated at two meters in length. It is not described as a white pointer,” the Tasmanian Government warning said on social media.
The incident is the latest in a series of shark encounters reported across Australia this year.
In June, teacher Leah Stewart suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a suspected great white shark while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s east.
The shark was estimated to be about 3.5 metres long and the attack occurred around 20 to 30 metres offshore.
Several beaches across Sydney’s eastern suburbs were closed in response, including Coogee, Bondi and Maroubra.
Weeks earlier, diver Daniel Turpin was killed in a shark attack off Western Australia’s southern coast.
The 35-year-old was spearfishing with family near Michaelmas Island, off Albany, when he was bitten by a suspected 4.5-metre shark.
Earlier this year, New South Wales experienced a series of shark attacks within a short period, including the death of 12-year-old Nico Antic.
Nico was attacked by a bull shark while jumping from rocks with friends near Nielsen Park in Sydney’s east in January.
He was taken to hospital with severe injuries to both legs but died almost a week later.
