Central Queensland teenager who was left fighting for his life after falling from a Gold Coast apartment building is now in a stable condition.
Tyler Calleja, 18, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in early July after he was found unconscious by a maintenance worker in the apartment complex.
He sustained significant head and abdominal injuries and was taken to the hospital in “a potentially life-threatening condition”, NewsWire reported at the time of the incident.
Gold Coast University has now confirmed that the teenager has been upgraded to a stable condition, reports the Courier Mail.
The passionate runner had completed a half marathon 24-hours before the fall.
A police spokesperson said Calleja was trying to gain entry into the building when he fell into the car park below.
Queensland Police Superintendent Kylie Rigg said it was “remarkable” the 18-year-old had survived such an impact during a press conference following the incident, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.
“We see falls all the time from buildings, and the result is quite tragic. So for him to have survived that is quite remarkable,” Ms Rigg said.
A GoFundMe page was set up after the incident to support Calleja and his family to help cover medical costs and has raised more than $100,000 as of Sunday afternoon.
In the days following the harrowing fall, the GoFundMe organiser said that the teenager was still receiving critical care and the road ahead remains “uncertain”.
“He is currently receiving care on the Gold Coast, surrounded by the love and support of his family,” the GoFundMe page wrote.
“Many in our community know Tyler as someone always willing to lend a hand.
“Through his involvement in local sport, fundraising and community events, he’s always been there for others. Now it’s our turn to be there for him.
“While the road ahead remains uncertain, we know the coming weeks and months will bring challenges for Tyler and his family.
“This fundraiser will help ease the financial burden by assisting with travel, accommodation and other unexpected expenses, allowing the family to focus on what matters most – Tyler’s recovery.”
