Shocking vision has emerged of a head-on crash involving a 51-year-old woman accused of speeding on the wrong side of Melbourne’s Bolte Bridge.
The collision took place about 11.30pm on Sunday night after officers were called to reports of a Subaru Outback being driven at speed the wrong way through the Burnley Tunnel.
Police say the woman allegedly behind the wheel of the car continued onto the Bolte Bridge before colliding with an oncoming Kia Sorrento head-on.
The woman, along with a 60-year-old man, both from Rye on the Mornington Peninsula, was arrested and later charged with reckless conduct offences, possession of a drug of dependence and various traffic offences, police say.
She was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
The vehicle was reportedly not stolen.
On Monday, footage of the crash was shared by 3AW’s Jacqui Felgate.
It shows the Kia, which was carrying six passengers, driving onto the bridge via an on-ramp when the speeding car comes into view.
“Oh Jesus,” the driver can be heard saying before swerving to his right of the two-lane ramp to avoid behind hit directly.
Passengers can be heard saying “Oh my god” over and over as they come to grips with what has just taken place.
One of the passengers is crying, while another says: “Ok, I’m going to call the police.”
None of the passengers were injured.
The footage was captured on the Kia’s front and rear dashcams.
The rear-view footage shows the speeding vehicle clip the Kia before getting airborne and crashing into the concrete barriers.
It narrowly misses a second vehicle travelling a short distance behind the Kia.
Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage of the Subaru driving through the Burnley Tunnel or on the Bolte Bridge to contact Crime Stoppers witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the Subaru traveling through the Burnley Tunnel towards the Bolte Bridge to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000 or submit an online confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
