A primary school was placed into lockdown after an alleged gunman fled the scene of a stolen car crash nearby.
As pupils were beginning the school day on Tuesday, police were called to reports that a man carrying a gun had left the scene of a crash, where a stolen car had ploughed into a fence at Pascoe Vale South, Melbourne.
Police placed nearby Pascoe Vale South Primary School under a tight lockdown as the drama unfolded.
The incident happened in Coonans Road, after a Volvo SUV which had been reported as stolen crashed into a fence, shortly after 9am.
The man, believed to have been allegedly carrying a gun, fled the scene of the crash on foot, but was apprehended in Parkstone Ave within 10 minutes.
Police also recovered a firearm near the scene, with a 29-year-old man from Pascoe Vale South due to be questioned over the incident.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the primary school was placed into lockdown for the duration of the manhunt as a precautionary measure.
Police allege the vehicle was stolen from an address in North Melbourne last week, on July 16, and was displaying stolen rego plates.
