A man has allegedly been caught speeding while drunk through Melbourne’s western suburbs on bare rims.

The 39-year-old sent sparks flying while driving through Tullamarine on Wednesday evening in his SUV, as three of the four wheels were only on their rims.

Footage obtained by 7News shows the SUV barrelling down the road, with large sparks flying onto the road and through the air.

The incident was reported to police, who found the car still on fire about 1.30am on Thursday outside the man’s Deer Park home on Bentley Drive.

“The driver was removed (from) the vehicle and the fire was extinguished,” a police statement read.

The man was taken to a police station for questioning and allegedly returned a blood alcohol result of 0.215 – four times the legal limit.

He was released on summons for driving offences.

Despite being taken to the police station, the man told 7News he couldn’t remember anything about the incident, citing poor health.

“I just remember having my third drink and that’s basically it after,” he said.

“I don’t know if I had more, I think I had more because I’m still feeling under the weather.”

The man said he was “pretty ashamed” of himself, and he was often critical of other motorists who broke the law.

“I watch the news and I’m just like ‘what d**kheads’ and stuff, and just to see that, I’m pretty embarrassed,” he said.

The man said it was lucky he managed not to injure anyone during the late-night joy ride.

“(I’m) pretty ashamed of myself, I guess,” he said.

“I’m just glad I didn’t hurt anyone”.
