A British couple have been charged after police allegedly found more than 100 kgs of ketamine at a hotel where they were staying.
Demi McDaid, 23, and Jack Farrelly, 30, from Scotland, looked like any other young couple when they arrived in Australia recently but they are now behind bars after allegedly being involved in a huge drugs bust.
NSW Police allege that the couple came to Australia with “the sole purpose of taking part in the distribution and supply of large commercial quantities of prohibited drugs”.
Police raided an apartment the couple had allegedly rented after a tip off from locals.
When they arrived at the unit in Artarmon, in Sydney’s northern suburbs, they allegedly found two kilograms of a prohibited drug, believed to be ketamine, scales, disposable gloves, clear resealable bags with white crystallised residue, and items of luggage.
Police tracked Ms McDaid and Mr Farrelly to a hotel in North Sydney and executed a search warrant on June 29.
They allegedly found a number of mobile phones and more than $2000 in cash.
Police also searched a car Ms McDaid had rented in the hotel’s car park and allegedly found 105 kgs of a drug, believed to be ketamine.
Police photos released to the media show reusable shopping bags filled with clear bags containing white powder inside the car’s boot.
The couple were arrested and charged with two counts of supplying a prohibited drug – one larger than an indictable quantity, and one larger than a commercial quantity.
The couple were refused bail when they appeared at Manly Local Court last month.
They will reappear in the Downing Centre Local Court on August 25.
