Kincoppal-Rose Bay School transformed its 144-year-old harbourside campus into a large-scalel lighting installation during Vivid Sydney, demonstrating how schools can use major cultural events to reimagine community marketing.

The school became part of Sydney’s night-time skyline, illuminating its heritage-listed buildings with a synchronised installation of 12 spotlights inspired by the rhythm and movement of the Sydney Harbour Bridge lighting design.

The activation marked the first time an independent school has created a major architectural lighting experience outside Sydney’s CBD during Vivid Sydney. It was designed as a strategic enrolment and brand campaign rather than a standalone event.

It combined paid social media, search, PR, community engagement, content marketing, direct marketing and a purpose-built digital experience to drive awareness and convert interest into school discovery tours.

Campaign results included more than 4,650 active users visiting the dedicated campaign microsite and over 5,500 page views generated throughout the campaign.

Paid social delivered large-scale reach and email marketing produced its highest conversion rate at approximately 10 per cent conversion to bookings.

“Independent schools are competing in an increasingly crowded market. We wanted to move beyond traditional school marketing and create something that people would genuinely remember,” said Kincoppal-Rose Bay director of strategic engagement Katherine Sadler.

“This wasn’t simply about lighting our buildings. It was about creating a powerful brand moment that celebrated our heritage while showcasing our ambition, creativity and willingness to innovate.”

Designed in partnership with architectural lighting specialists, the installation respected the school’s heritage while using lighting technology to create a visual experience visible across Sydney Harbour.
