Matt Payne claimed pole position for the opening sprint race of the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super440 at Wanneroo Raceway on 1 August, heading a disrupted two-part qualifying session by 0.037s.
Payne set a best of 54.0483s in the top 10 run-off to secure top spot ahead of Cam Waters, with the Tickford Ford driver falling just short on his final run. The session ran in two parts on a drying track following overnight rain. The opening segment set grid positions 11 to 24, and the shootout decided the top 10.
Thomas Randle produced the standout late lap of the top 10 session, jumping to third at the chequered flag to demote Ryan Wood and Kai Allen. Wood, who had topped the opening segment, could manage only fourth, with Allen fifth.
Toyotas set the early pace
Brad Jones Racing looked quick in the early running of the shootout, with Andre Heimgartner leading the first feeler lap ahead of teammate Cam Hill. The two BJR Toyotas headed the order before the frontrunners found their rhythm.
Even with only 10 cars on track, the drivers struggled for clear space and repeatedly ran into traffic. Both Brad Jones Racing cars were caught out while working out track position, and Hill was run onto the grass in a moment with Waters. Hill returned to the pitlane and climbed from the car, leaving him 10th.
Brodie Kostecki qualified sixth, ahead of Heimgartner in seventh and Rylan Gray in eighth. Anton De Pasquale briefly went quickest with 30 seconds remaining before slipping back to ninth.
Incidents disrupt the opening segment
The first segment was interrupted by two red flags. Zach Bates beached his MSR Camaro in the Turn 1 sand trap, having gone fourth quickest on his opening lap, then lost that time when the session was stopped.
At the restart, Ryan Wood and Jobe Stewart made contact at the final corner, leaving Stewart’s Erebus buried in the gravel and missing its front bumper. Stewart said he was about to begin a lap and was unaware both Walkinshaw cars were already on flying laps.
Chaz Mostert was baulked on a flying lap by Bates and Stewart, while Jayden Ojeda and Cooper Murray survived a near miss at Turn 1. Stewards handed Bates, Stewart and Ojeda two-grid-spot penalties for the incidents.
Hill sneaks through as Brown and Mostert miss out
Wood topped the opening segment with a 54.02s lap, but the battle for the final top 10 places went down to hundredths. Cam Hill advanced by just 0.02s over Mostert, who was left 11th. Will Brown qualified 12th, both drivers missing the cut for the shootout.
Broc Feeney lined up 13th after an error at the final corner on used tyres. Team boss Jamie Whincup confirmed Feeney had been on for a strong lap before the mistake. Mostert reported he had been unable to hear his team during the session and was unaware of the running order.
Race 1 of the Perth Super440 gets underway later today.
