Chaos has unfolded in Glebe as a knife-wielding youth allegedly stole a luxury car and then slammed into a tree while the car’s owner wrestled with him inside the vehicle.
Residents woke to a massive bang and screams about 6.30am on Sunday as the incident unfolded on Bell St, an otherwise quiet road in Sydney’s inner west.
A distressed mother and son were at the scene of the crashed BMW.
They had woken moments earlier to find the garage door open at their Wigram Road property and a balaclava-wearing youth, wielding a knife, trying to steal the car.
As the youth allegedly sped away, the son leapt into the car and tussled with him, hanging half out of the vehicle.
The car sped up Boyce Lane and turned on to Bell Street, where it careened off the road and into a tree.
The alleged thief then managed to escape, running to Wigram Road.
Meanwhile, the explosive sound of the car crash had woken up a neighbouring resident who called the police.
The son was left with scrapes on his body but told bystanders he didn’t require an ambulance.
A witness described seeing the alleged thief link up with another balaclava-wearing youth who was waiting on an e-bike on Wigram Road, before the pair took off towards Glebe Point Road.
The father and owner of the BMW, who had been asleep when the incident happened, found the mother and son on Bell Street, and they told him about their ordeal.
Police arrived shortly afterwards and cordoned off the crash site, questioning the family for details of the suspect.
It’s understood the area has become a target for teen thieves recently.
