NRL fans have been left stunned after Cameron Munster was named to make a shock early return from knee surgery against Manly on Saturday. The Melbourne Storm star hasn’t played since Round 17 after undergoing surgery to repair a cartilage injury.
The Storm initially stated he’d be out for 4-6 weeks, and the five-eighth wasn’t expected back until Round 25 after Melbourne’s bye. But the 31-year-old was named in the No.6 jersey on Tuesday for the Storm’s clash with the Sea Eagles, which is only three weeks since the surgery.

Considering the Storm’s finals chances are all-but over, fans were blown away that Munster will play so soon after the surgery. Heading into Round 23, Craig Bellamy’s side are six points outside the top-eight with five rounds remaining. They’re still a mathematical chance to play finals footy, but in 12th spot on the ladder it isn’t looking good.
Bryan Fletcher said on SEN radio on Tuesday afternoon: “The Munny man is playing, how good. I didn’t think he was expected to back just yet.”
One fan wrote on social media: “Ok, that was a fast recovery for Munster. I’m glad he’s back but I thought he was out for at least 5 weeks.” While another commented: “Should’ve not rushed Munster back. Should’ve returned after the bye. I’m all for it though.”

It comes amid speculation as to where Munster’s future in the NRL might lie. The game against Manly will be played in Perth, and Munster has been linked to potentially joining the Bears.
He was recently given permission to speak to PNG about a potential move in 2028, but stated he’ll be keen to stay in Melbourne if Bellamy extends. “I’ve got to make sure it’s right for me and my family. If he’s not sure what he wants to do, sometimes you can’t wait for someone else when you’re making decisions for your family,” said Munster, who is off contract at the end of 2027.

“I love Craig and I love the Melbourne Storm. I’m not saying I’m not going to stay, but November 1 comes around and I’ve got to make sure I do the right thing for me and my family.
“I’ve taken pay cuts throughout my career. I’m not saying I won’t take one again, but I’ve got to make sure my family’s in a great position long-term. Footy’s not everything, and it doesn’t last forever. I’ve got to work after footy, so I want to make sure I’m financially stable for myself and my kids.”
