Labor MP Ed Husic has announced he is taking a short period of medical leave to recover from injuries sustained in a “serious” multi-vehicle car crash on a major Sydney motorway.
Mr Husic was driving home along the M7 on Tuesday night when a truck hit the rear of his sedan, a spokesperson for the backbencher told NewsWire on Thursday.
NSW Police confirmed the truck was a B-double and that a ute was also caught up in the incident near Richmond Road.
Neither of the other drivers were injured and that an investigation was underway, police said.
“According to the attending paramedics’ report, Mr Husic’s vehicle was impacted by a truck from behind and slightly to the right of the driver’s side while travelling at approximately 80km/h,” the spokesperson said.
“Mr Husic was transported by paramedics to hospital for assessment and treatment.
“He was discharged on Wednesday with minor abrasions, fractures and a concussion.
“Mr Husic was not at fault in the accident and is providing a statement to police.”
Photos released by Mr Husic’s office showed heavy damage to the rear-right of his Tesla, with airbags discharged and the back window shattered.
The spokesperson said Mr Husic got medical advice to “take a short period of leave from parliamentary duties while he recovers” and that he was thankful to “the doctors, nurses and paramedics at Westmead Hospital for providing him with outstanding care”.
“Mr Husic was extremely grateful to walk away from the accident without more serious injury,” they said.
NewsWire understands Anthony Albanese has contacted Mr Husic.
