Brisbane coach Chris Fagan remains wary of another “horror game” at the business end of the AFL season despite the Lions bouncing back from their heavy loss to Carlton in emphatic fashion with a 67-point demolition of Hawthorn.

Thrashed by 76 points the previous week by the Blues, the back-to-back premiers hit back hard at the Gabba on Friday night with a 18.17 (125) to 8.10 (58) win.

“You’ve just got to remember our players are human,” Fagan said.

“They’d won seven games in a row and had a bad day last week, but they’ve always been a group over the last seven or eight years that have always been able to bounce back after disappointments.

“We put that performance in the bin pretty quickly, and just moved on to this week, and I think the players appreciated that and responded well tonight.”

However, with the Lions locked in a battle for a top-four spot ahead the upcoming finals seasons, Fagan knows his side can ill-afford another performance like last week at Marvel Stadium.

“Of the last nine games that we’ve played, we’ve had one game where our defensive intensity wasn’t where it should be,” he said.

“I felt like all the other games were somewhere near the mark, so we’ve just got to make sure we don’t have another one of those horror games for the rest of the year.

“That’s the key to it all, but you could tell our energy was up from the start (against Hawthorn), whereas last week it was down.

“I thought our defenders played well tonight. They had a bad night last week, (but on Friday night) they were on their toes and played a great game.”

Defensive rock Harris Andrews was immense, while in attack, Kai Lohmann had a night to remember, kicking five goals in a 24-possession performance.

“I thought Kai Lohmann’s performance tonight was one of the most special games I’ve ever seen a small forward play,” Fagan said.

“He got a lot of the ball. His tackle pressure was sensational, and he kicked five goals.

“He doesn’t have to worry about doing all those freakish things. They just happen. When he focuses entirely on putting pressure on, his game seems to come together.”

Star midfielder Will Ashcroft was also superb with a game-high 39 possessions.

“He’s hit a purple patch, hasn’t he?,” Fagan said.

“He’s a very good player. He led the way tonight in all sorts of ways. He can win his own ball, uses it well, (and) he’s explosive.”
