A man has taken his own life after NSW Police sex crime squad officers raided his Blue Mountains home.

The incident happened after officers executed a search warrant at a home on Grose Street, Leura, at 7am on Tuesday.

Police found the 41-year-old man inside a bedroom, where he self-harmed.

“Police immediately rendered first aid and sought assistance from NSW Ambulance paramedics, however, the man died at the scene,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A critical incident team from Mt Druitt Police Area Command will lead the independent investigation team examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The officers from the sex crime squad and the public order and riot squad were executing a commonwealth search warrant.

It was part of an operation called Strike Force Trawler, an ongoing covert investigation targeting online sexual abuse, grooming and child exploitation material.

Officers were attending the property with the intention of arresting an individual.

NSW Police has confirmed that a report will be prepared for the state coroner following the man’s death, as well as an independent standards probe into police conduct during the incident.

A cordon is now in place in the surrounding area as investigations continue.
