The Lion King Musical will roar to life in Melbourne next year, with the spectacular Disney show set to open to audiences in March at The Regent Theatre.

“The vibe in Melbourne is on another level,’’ said Aphiwe Nyezi who plays Simba.

“And whether you watched it in the 2000s or now, it’s a timeless production.”

Nyezi, from Cape Town in South Africa, auditioned three times before landing the leading role.

He is joined by Buyi Zama who has played Rafiki in Las Vegas, Taiwan, South Africa, Shanghai and the West End.

“My first time doing this role was 2002 and it’s been a joy,’’ Zama said.

“It will be my third season in Melbourne and the thing that’s awesome is the people and the energy everyone brings.

“It’s one of those stories you love and we want to share it with the new generation. I get to sing in my language and there’s a connection to my culture and traditions.”

The cast of the 2026-27 production represents some of the best talent from Australia, New Zealand and around the world, who bring the beloved characters of the theatrical masterpiece to life, using more than 232 puppets throughout the show.

The Lion King is currently playing at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney until November 1.

It will then go to Brisbane from November 15 before relocating to Melbourne in March 2027.
