Sydney Swans chief executive Matthew Pavlich says he is “extremely shocked and disappointed” to learn several players have been caught up in a police investigation into an alleged sexual assault at a Melbourne hotel.
The Swans maintained momentum towards the AFL finals with a win over the Bombers at the MCG but there was allegedly an incident at their hotel afterwards.
“Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault in East Melbourne on 17 August,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
“The incident occurred at a hotel on Wellington Parade in the early hours of the morning.
“The exact circumstances are yet to be established and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
The Herald Sun reported that as many as eight police officers with clipboards and cameras were seen around the venue on Sunday.
An “extremely shocked and disappointed” Sydney chief executive Matthew Pavlich fronted the media on Monday for less than a minute.
“We can confirm that several players were involved in an alleged incident last night in Melbourne,” he said.
“We’ve identified this to the AFL. We are working with them and also the relevant authorities on this matter.
“We’re still piecing together exactly what’s transpired here and have our own set of inquiries ongoing.
“It’s safe to say we’re extremely shocked and disappointed that this has taken place and that the players have found themselves in this situation.
“We understand the level of interest in the matter. There’s going to be lots of speculation, but given it’s a police matter right now that’s all we can say.”
The Swans also released a brief statement on Monday afternoon confirming an “alleged incident”.
“The Sydney Swans can confirm several players were involved in an alleged incident in Melbourne last night,” the club said.
“The Swans have notified the AFL and relevant authorities, and cannot provide further comment at this stage.”
Sydney is currently second on the ladder and faces North Melbourne this weekend.
