AUSTRALIAN Pop Star and former competitive swimmer Cody Simpson has been chosen to sing the national anthem at the historic NFL game on September 11.
And the sound of “Sweet Caroline” will ring out around the MCG during a midgame break with the cast of The Neil Diamond Musical to perform during the first NFL game in Australia.
Simpson has been chosen by the NFL to perform the national anthem as another milestone in a career that includes representing Australia in the 2022 Commonwealth Games before returning to his musical career.
American rock band Infinity Song will perform the American national anthem as part of a pre-game spectacle for the 10.35am Friday morning game.
Last week the NFL revealed that the multi platinum Jonas Brothers would perform at half time of the clash between the LA Rams and San Francisco 49ers.
Recording artist and singer songwriter Simpson was signed by Atlantic Records at 13 and was one of the celebrity contestants on America’s Dancing With The Stars.
He returned to swimming in 2019 and swam in the 50m butterfly in the 2022 Commonwealth Games but did not qualify for the Paris Olympics two years later.
He said on Tuesday he was ecstatic to be singing the national anthem in front of a sold-out MCG crowd.
“As both a proud Aussie and proud Californian, I’m excited to be singing the Australian National Anthem
at the upcoming first-ever regular season NFL game played on Australian soil,” said Simpson.
“Growing up between Australia and the United States, I’ve followed the NFL for years and have also been to many sporting events at the iconic MCG, so I’m excited to witness and be a part of this unique spectacle. And to watch two epic California teams battle it out, including my local Los Angeles Rams! See you there.”
