Brisbane Broncos fans are delighted Billy Walters has re-signed with the club after months of speculation over his future. This comes as Corey Parker called for Walters to be handed the captaincy next year with Adam Reynolds retiring at the end of the season.
A rival Queensland team was keeping an eye on Walters’ contract talks with Walters negotiating with the Broncos over a deal. Walters only recently returned for the Michael Maguire after suffering an ACL injury in the NRL finals last year in their premiership-winning season.

Walters has already made a difference to Brisbane’s attack having helped unlock the likes of Reece Walsh in his few games back. Although the Broncos’ slide has continued with the side sitting in second-last having lost four in a row since their win over the Panthers.
But Broncos fans are delighted to have locked down Walters for another two years. “It means a lot to me to know I’ll be staying here until the end of 2028,” Walters said in a statement. “I’m excited to get back to playing my best football and hopefully we can achieve plenty more together over the next few years.”

Walters will likely go into next season as the Broncos’ premier dummy-half with his experience going to be a bonus for the side’s new halves combination for the campaign. The Broncos are losing a number of players for next season and stability will be important as they look to bounce back.
Reynolds’ retirement is going to prompt a shake-up in the spine. And Walters’ news delighted Broncos fans.

And Walters’ re-signing is only going to reassure Broncos great Parker he should become captain next year. Parker urged the club to consider Walters the club captain next year ahead of Walsh or Patrick Carrigan.
The Broncos need to decide on a new captain next year after Reynolds announced his retirement from the game at the end of the season. Most expect Carrigan to be the man with the Queensland and Australian forward already taking a leadership role in the playing group and filling in when Reynolds is injured. Walsh’s name has also been thrown around. Although Parker feels Walters encapsulates everything a Broncos leader should be with his re-signing also prompting fans to suggest he should take over the role.
“I think of a person…when I sit back and look and I see who has influence on those around him, Billy Walters is a name that just keeps coming up to me,” Parker said on SEN radio. “When I think team first, selflessness, communicating towards the general public, worth ethic, respect, accountability these sorts of things. It is something that is just engrained in Billy Walters.
“He plays a pivotal position, he will have a huge influence of what is going in terms of energy…from a leadership point of view he has all the qualities.” Walters will start for the Broncos this weekend against the Raiders at GIO Stadium.
