A major redevelopment of Ballymore Stadium in Herston will deliver new high-performance sporting facilities and further transform the precinct into a major rugby and community sporting destination.

The redevelopment will include a new high-performance training facility and the replacement of the Eastern Stand, with Ballymore set to become the permanent Queensland headquarters for Australia’s Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens programs and the Wallaroos.

The precinct will also provide a Queensland base for the Wallabies when the team is in the state, with up to 90 Rugby Australia athletes and staff expected to relocate from New South Wales.

The latest works form part of the ongoing transformation of Ballymore, following the approval of the broader Ballymore Masterplan in 2022. Our previous article, Ballymore Masterplan – Herston, Brisbane, outlined the earlier plans for the precinct, including the National Rugby Training Centre, new grandstand facilities, sports administration, allied health and community facilities.

A new high-performance facility will be delivered at Ballymore to provide a permanent Queensland base for Australia’s Rugby Sevens and Wallaroos programs. The facility will support training, athlete development and high-performance operations, further establishing Ballymore as a major centre for elite rugby.

The existing Eastern Stand will be replaced as part of the redevelopment. The new stand will form part of the wider upgrade of Ballymore and support the precinct’s role as a venue for rugby matches and other sporting events. Further details about the final design, seating capacity and construction program have not yet been released.

The redevelopment will support both elite and community rugby at Ballymore. The precinct has already been subject to a broader masterplan, approved in 2022, which included plans for a National Rugby Training Centre, new sporting facilities, administration and allied health uses, recreation areas and improved community spaces. The latest works continue the long-term transformation of Ballymore into a high-performance and community sporting precinct.

The upgraded precinct will support major rugby events and sporting activities. Ballymore will also play a role in Queensland’s growing rugby calendar, with the state scheduled to host major international rugby events over the coming years.
