A carjacker has been killed when he crashed a high-powered Mustang he had stolen in another collision just minutes earlier near the MCG.
It ended a terrifying few minutes in which the man, who had been driving erratically in a stolen Subaru, first crashed into two vehicles, including the Mustang, on Punt Rd about 9pm on Saturday.
The 46-year-old Melton man then jumped out of the Subaru and got into the Mustang before speeding off, Victoria Police said in a statement.
“Police have been told the man was seen driving a stolen white Subaru erratically in the Richmond area before he collided with two vehicles, including a Mustang, on Punt Road on Saturday 22 August around 9pm,” the police statement said.
“The Subaru is reported to have been travelling on the wrong side of the road when the collision occurred with motorists travelling north.
“The man got out of the crashed vehicle and jumped into the Mustang before speeding off.
“He continued driving erratically in the stolen Mustang onto Barassi Way where he collided head on with a Range Rover and then into a Toyota Camry.
“The 46-year-old Melton man was ejected from the Mustang and died at the scene.”
Police said a woman who was driving a Range Rover was taken to hospital for treatment to an injured arm. The other motorist involved wasn’t injured.
The driver of the Mustang involved in the first crash was not in the car when the carjacker took off with it.
Brunton Ave was closed to traffic while police processed the scene.
Police are also following up reports the vehicle was seen driving erratically in Clarendon and Whiteman streets prior to the first collision.
The Subaru, which was bearing false plates, was stolen from Glen Iris on August 20.
