Police arrived within minutes and took a man into custody.

Witnesses described seeing shoppers and staff hurried from the supermarket as police officers and centre security moved through the area.

Parts of the shopping centre were evacuated while emergency crews responded.

Paramedics assessed three people at the scene. One man suffered a hand injury and was taken to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.

The two other people assessed by paramedics were not physically injured.

Police have charged an 18-year-old man with one count each of intended to cause grievous bodily harm, going armed so as to cause fear, and stealing.

He was denied police bail and is expected to appear at Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Saturday.
