A purification ceremony has taken place outside the residence where an Australian man was
allegedly caught in a public sex act.
Billy Aspinall, from Queensland’s Coolum Beach, is expected to be deported on Friday after he was arrested at Bali’s Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport while boarding a plane back to Brisbane.
The 27-year-old was detained by authorities after CCTV footage of an alleged 15-minute incident went viral.
He and an unidentified woman were allegedly shown on camera performing several sex acts next to the residential property in Tibubeneng village, North Kuta.
A local woman stumbled across the pair as she was on her way to prayer and reportedly shouted at them to stop what they were doing.
Mr Aspinall, who is a mechanic by trade, is not expected to face charges over the incident.
Local police chief Joseph Purba on Thursday said the case has been handed over to immigration who will deport the suspect after the homeowners decided not to press charges.
Mr Purba, who called the case ‘closed’, said the Australian told them he had been drinking and that he didn’t know the name or nationality of the woman in the video.
“The Australian national claimed they engaged in the act while intoxicated,” Mr Purba said, “He had only recently met the woman at an entertainment venue.”
Mr Aspinall’s parents told Nine News they haven’t been in contact with him and plan on speaking to him when he gets home.
In Bali, sexual intercourse in public is believed to bring bad energy to the home.
A Hindi ceremony was performed on Thursday to purify the premises with about nine people taking part to cleanse the environment of negative influences.
Facial recognition technology was used to identify Mr Aspinall from the viral video, leading to his arrest at the airport.
“On Tuesday (25/8/2026), B.A. (police used this acronym) was successfully secured by the inspection officer of (immigration checkpoint) Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport while departing for Brisbane,” officials said.
“Intelligence and Immigration Action Team (Inteldakim) Immigration Office Ngurah Rai moves quickly to secure those concerned, which was later handed over to Badung Resort Police for further legal process.”
While Bali itself is a predominantly Hindu, Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country that has conservative laws and harsh views on pornography.
North Kuta chief police commander Ketut Sukadana said this week the alleged “indecent acts have the potential to cause public concern.”
“Particularly among the residents of Tibubeneng, and may negatively affect the image of security and tourism in the North Kuta area if the matter is not addressed and handled seriously by taking firm action against the perpetrators, whether under local customary law or national law,” he said.
