A man believed to be in his 20s has been shot dead during a “targeted” home invasion in Sydney’s south-west but a case of mistaken identity could not be ruled out, police say.
Emergency services were called to the Glen Alpine home about 3:40am.
Campbelltown City Police Area Command Acting Superintendent Gretchen Atkins said the man died at the scene.
“We believe at this point in time it is a targeted attack,” she said.
“That’s all the information we have been able to gather at this point in time, it is really early stages of the investigation.”

Acting Superintendent Atkins said investigators were aware of social media posts, including one shared by underworld figure Iziah Utai overnight that said “popped the wrong person didn’t even get the right house”.
“We don’t know a lot at the moment but everything is being considered,” Acting Superintendent Atkins said.
Family assisting investigators
Acting Superintendent Atkins said there were multiple offenders but they fled the scene prior to police arriving.
“The victim is known for a traffic offence, so he’s not known to us. The family is assisting us,” she said.

Police have asked the public to report any suspicious activity in the area that may support their investigation.
“Any people who have any information at all, cars in the area before, after, in the lead-up to, we’re really really keen to hear from so we can identify exactly what has occurred,” she said.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway with assistance from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
