A young casino worker has tragically plunged to her death from The Star Casino’s 100-metre Sky Deck in Brisbane, despite multiple safety warnings it has been alleged.
The 24-year-old chef from the Philippines died by suicide after climbing onto the deck by scaling a handrail gap beside a glass safety barrier.
It’s alleged that The Star didn’t act on repeated warnings from senior staff about the potential safety risks, according to emails that were obtained by The Sydney Morning Herald.
The first written warning is believed to have came from a senior manager in Brisbane in May 2025, when he flagged the handrail on the Sky Deck as an obvious and “major” safety concern.
He warned it would be easy for someone to climb through a gap in the safety glass partition on the 23rd floor.
This was almost a year before the 24-year-old, who was working in Star Brisbane’s room service division, used the section to take her own life.
He followed up in July 2025, again highlighting the dangerous gap between the glass panels.
Another manager is understood to have raised the issue again in September 2025, warning of the “risk of falls (wilful acts)”.
He urged Star Brisbane to see if modifications could be carried out to stop people from being able to scale the external balustrades, specifically suggesting the removal of the curved handrails.
A month later, it’s claimed a technical specialist hired by the casino’s owners Destination Brisbane Consortium (DBC) to independently review the area issued a report highlighting the urgent need to address the barrier’s “climbability”.
“Recent and unfortunate incidents have highlighted the potential for some facade elements to be misused as scalable hand and foot holds – in particular the Sky Deck balustrade handrail,” the report read.
But despite the many warnings, it’s claimed no action was taken before the young worker’s death eight months later.
Following the tragedy, The Star is believed to have hired security and installed temporary hoarding, but no permanent structural fix has been implemented.
