Kate Eddy’s messy split with the Melbourne Vixens has taken a twist with the defender receiving a Super Netball lifeline from cross-town rivals the Mavericks.
Eddy will seek to re-launch her career as a training partner at the Mavericks in a “new chapter” for the 29-year-old after seven years with the Vixens.
One of the biggest talking points of the Super Netball contracting period, Eddy was left without a spot on the Vixens’ list for next season after what the wing defence described as a “breakdown in communication”.
Eddy’s manager Anthony Panozzo hit out at the Vixens for pulling their contract offer late, leaving her no time to find a spot at another club.
But the Vixens explained they had wanted to retain Eddy, but they had been unable to reach an agreement with her management in the required time frame.
A fan favourite among the Vixens’ faithful, the controversial loss of Eddy amid a wider list shake-up at the Vixens sparked widespread backlash among fans.
Now, the Mavericks have swooped to offer Eddy – a two time premiership winner with the Vixens – a spot as a training partner for 2027.
Eddy said she was grateful for the opportunity to start a fresh chapter at the Mavs.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Mavs and beginning a new chapter in my netball career,” Eddy said.
“I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity the club has given me and I’m looking forward to being part of what is already a really exciting journey.
“The Mavs achieved some incredible things last season and it’s clear there is a strong culture, ambition and belief within the group. I’m excited to get to work with my new teammates and contribute however I can.
“I’ve always admired the way the club has gone about building its identity and I’m grateful for the chance to become part of that story.”
Regarded as one of the league’s premier wing defences, Eddy was part of the Vixens’ title winning teams in 2020 and 2025.
She has featured the past three Super Netball grand finals with the Vixens.
Mavericks coach Gerard Murphy said the club had no hesitation bringing Eddy into the club’s fold as a training partner.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have someone of Kate’s calibre joining our squad,” Murphy said.
“She is one of the competition’s premier defenders and has consistently performed at an elite level for a long period of time.
“Kate brings invaluable experience from some of the most successful programs in the league, but just as importantly she brings outstanding leadership, professionalism and a genuine team-first approach.
“When you look at the impact she’s had across more than 120 Super Netball matches, multiple premierships and numerous grand finals, it’s clear the quality of person and player we’re bringing into our environment.
“We’re delighted to be welcoming her to the Mavs.”
Eddy joins the already-announced Charlotte Sexton as a Mavericks’ training partner for next season.
