A Mother’s Day tragedy has left a mum of five fighting for life following a horrific hit-and-run in Melbourne’s west.
Tania Kerr, 41, sustained life-threatening injuries after she was struck by a car while riding an e-scooter in Melton on Sunday morning.
The mother of five was returning home from a friend’s house when she was hit on Swan Street just after 12.30am, with neighbours rushing to render assistance on the road.
The vehicle that allegedly hit her, a small white hatch, failed to stop at the scene, escaping along Swan St towards O’Niells Rd.
The Melton mother was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she remains in an induced coma with critical head wounds and spinal injuries.
Tania’s partner Kayla Grech spent Mother’s Day by her bedside, issuing the driver an impassioned plea to turn themselves in.
“I’m very angry, very hurt, lost for words really,” she said.
“Especially to leave someone like that on the side of the road.
“She’s an amazing person, she’s loving, caring.
“The best person you could ever ask for.”
Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Emile Caggiati said the Mother’s Day hit-and-run was “deplorable”.
“It’s appalling really, any motorist that leaves the scene of collision where someone needs assistance, that behaviour is just deplorable.”
The senior sergeant urged e-scooter riders to take extra precaution when riding in the dark, saying they should be visible enough for drivers to see them.
“Wear a helmet, and if you’re travelling at night make sure you’ve got lights operating and maybe wear some reflective gear just to help drivers be able to see you.”
