The Australian PGA Championship’s switch to Sydney has added to New South Welshman Cam Davis’ excitement about returning home for the summer of golf.

A two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Davis will tee off in both the Australian PGA and the Australian Open this year.

“As an Australian, you always want to come home and play well, and there’s something really special about competing in front of your own fans,” Davis said ahead of the “Aussie majors” that are co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the DP World Tour.

With the Australian PGA moving to The Lakes from Royal Queensland, Davis has extra incentive to lift the Joe Kirkwood Cup for the first time at the November 26-29 event.

“It’s always pretty special to come back to Sydney and play in front of friends and family,” he said.

“I haven’t won the Australian PGA yet, so it would be pretty special to add my name to that trophy.”

PGA of Australia chief executive Gavin Kirkman echoed Davis’ sentiments.

“Cam hasn’t won the Australian PGA yet, and I know how much it would mean to him to do that in November,” Kirkman said.

A tournament that 31-year-old Davis has won is the Australian Open, and he’s eager to add a second Stonehaven Cup to his collection at Melbourne’s Kingston Heath

“The Australian Open has always been a really important tournament to me,” said Davis, who won the event in 2017.

“I grew up watching it and dreaming about playing in it, so to actually win it was a pretty special moment in my career.

“Looking back, that week really kickstarted my professional career. It gave me opportunities to play overseas and helped me get on the PGA Tour, so it’s fair to say the Australian Open has played a huge part in where I am today.

“I’m really excited to get to Kingston Heath. It’s one of the great golf courses in Australia and one that I’ve always loved playing.

“To have the Australian Open there, on the Sandbelt, is going to be pretty special.”

Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said Davis’ return would add “further quality and pedigree” to a December 3-6 event field that already includes Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Cam Smith, Lucas Herbert, Corey Conners and Josele Ballester.

“Cam is a proven winner at the highest level and having an Australian Open champion coming back to compete at Kingston Heath is fantastic for the championship,” Sutherland said.

“He knows what it takes to win this title and he knows what it means to Australian golfers and fans.

“Cam has gone on to achieve so much internationally since winning the Australian Open and there will be much more to come.”
