Two dead in light plane crash at Stockleigh, Logan, after taking off from Brisbane airport

Two people are dead after their light plane crashed just minutes after taking off from an airport southwest of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to reports a light aircraft had crashed on a rural property near Musch Rd at Stockleigh, Logan, about 11.10am on Monday.

Flight tracking data shows the six-seater Beechcraft Bonanza departed Archerfield Airport at 10.58am, with its last recorded position about 11.06am.

Queensland Police Chief Superintendent Mel Adams said two people were found dead inside the aircraft.

“Tragically, when we attended, we located two deceased persons within that aircraft,” she said.

Police later confirmed they were believed to be a 56-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both from Ascot, Brisbane.

Adams described the scene as “quite confronting” for first responders and said police were still working with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to determine what happened.

Police are yet to publicly identify the two people killed, with next-of-kin notifications still underway.

Adams said investigators would be guided by the specialist aviation team as they worked towards answers for the families of those killed and to learn from the incident.

“We want good outcomes for the family and we like to learn from these incidents,” she said.

She said the aircraft came down near homes but no one on the ground was injured and no other property was damaged.

A grass fire sparked by the crash has since been contained, with police establishing a forensic investigation scene at the property.“

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation into the crash, deploying three specialist investigators to the scene.

Once on site from Monday afternoon they will commence evidence-gathering activities including site and wreckage examination, and the recovery of any aircraft components of interest for further examination at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra,” a spokesperson said.

“Investigators will also interview any witnesses and involved parties, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data, as well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.”

The ATSB is also asking anyone with video footage of the aircraft’s final flight to come forward via its website.

A preliminary report detailing the factual circumstances surrounding the crash is expected in about eight weeks.

The crash scene is expected to remain in place overnight and into Tuesday, with darkness likely to slow the investigation.

Police have urged the public to stay away from the area and asked anyone who saw or heard the aircraft before the crash, or who may have dashcam footage, to contact investigators.
