Cameron Munster’s decision to test his value on the open market could have major ramifications for the Brisbane Broncos, with links to the Storm star raising fresh questions over the future of Ezra Mam.

Bound to attract significant interest from around the NRL come November 1, the Storm will have a fight on their hands to retain the services of the Queensland Maroons captain.

Although he remains contracted until the end of 2027, he could find himself at the centre of a bidding war with the Perth Bears, PNG Chiefs and Brisbane Broncos among the clubs linked with a move for the veteran five-eighth.

“He’s going to November 1 and going to see what’s out there,” CODE Sports reporter Brent Read said on NRL 360.

“The Storm is still hopeful and confident they can keep him and convince him to stay.

“(When) he hits November 1, he will get some significant interest from around the NRL. They’ve got a fight on their hands, the Storm.

“He’s been linked with the Broncos which is a really interesting one for me. They will have the money in 12 months’ time.

“Perth and PNG are the other ones. PNG are in the market for a halfback.

“They’ve been linked with Nathan Cleary and Sam Walker but if they miss out on both those guys, I’d imagine Cam would be high on their radar. He’ll have interest.”

The Broncos’ interest in Munster is particularly intriguing given they are expected to have significant salary-cap room in 12 months’ time for the 2028 season.

But any move for the Storm superstar would force the club to make some difficult decisions in their halves due to having Ezra Mam, Jonah Pezet and Thomas Duffy on their books.

In particular, his potential arrival would put the spotlight firmly on Mam and whether the Broncos remain prepared to keep on investing in him or decide to let him go.

Earning around $800,000 to $900,000 a season, the Broncos could free up a ton of salary cap space if they were to move him on and put that towards Munsters.

“(Ben) Hunt would be gone (so it frees up money in the cap). The Mam one is interesting for me. I think he’s on the $800,000-900,000 so that’s the interesting one,” Read added.

“They don’t care about getting rid of players that have got potential.

“That hasn’t been an issue for them in recent years.”

Once viewed as a key part of the Broncos’ long-term spine and their future, Mam has regressed over the past 12 months, but his high potential makes the prospect of Brisbane cutting ties a fascinating one.

However, if they opt to go all-in for Munster, they could be forced to choose between the pair.

NRL 360 co-host Braith Anasta said, “It would be hard to get rid of Mam though because you know how much potential he’s got and he’s only young.”
