Labor MP Ed Husic has returned to work after recovering from a serious car crash, saying the experience had given him a “new lease of life”.

The Chifley MP was travelling home from his electorate office on Sydney’s M7 motorway on August 4 when a truck slammed into his Tesla shortly after 6pm.

Mr Husic was treated at the scene by paramedics before he was taken to hospital.

He was discharged the following morning with minor abrasions, a hairline fracture to his back and a concussion, and subsequently took leave from his parliamentary duties.

Speaking to News24’s Kieran Gilbert on Tuesday he said he felt very lucky to be alive.

“The biggest thing is I feel very lucky,” he said.

“I feel very grateful for all the help I got through Westmead Hospital, and I have got a terrific doctor out at Mount Druitt who has helped me big time, and a physio.

“I have a new lease of life I tell you.”

Mr Husic said he had suffered after-effects from the concussion sustained during the crash, and his fracture was still healing.

“The after-effects of the concussion have sort of washed out,” he said.

“Though that messed with my brain a bit for a while.

“I have just got a hairline fracture in my back which I am dealing with and that will take another eight weeks to sort itself out.”

The MP said he did not remember anything in the hours leading up to or following the crash.  

“My mind is a blank from midday,” Mr Husic said.

“I have seen some people that I saw on the day and I have said, ‘Listen, my diary says that I met you that day, but we are going to have to have another meeting because I can’t remember anything we discussed’,” he said.

“I am now having follow up meetings with people I saw on that day.”

Mr Husic said his first thought after regaining consciousness in the emergency department was whether anyone else had been injured.

“I couldn’t get over, when I woke up, that I had been in an accident,” he said.

“I was genuinely concerned I might have hurt someone else.”

Mr Husic was stationary on a slip road when the impact occurred.

The trailer of a large truck travelling at approximately 80 kilometres per hour fishtailed, swiping the rear right side of his Tesla.

“I had no clue what was happening behind me I didn’t see behind me what was going on,” he said.

“The full extend of it was not clear to me until I turned up to the smash repairs the next day, in Mount Druitt and I saw.

“I was just so thankful that I didn’t have anyone in that back seat.

“It just crushed it.”

Mr Husic was not at fault in the collision.

 Soon after the incident he said he was hopeful he would be able to return to parliament for the early September sitting.

“I’m very keen to get back during the work that I need to do for my community,” he said.

“I’ve sort of been progressively doing more and more hours in the office.

“I started that last week, and I’m continuing that, and I’m hoping to be able to go back to parliament next week.”
