Family of Jake and Callum Robinson in court in Mexico as Perth brothers’ accused killers go on trial

The parents of two Australian brothers allegedly murdered while on a surf trip with their friend in Mexico have come face to face with their accused killers in court.

Callum and Jake Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad were allegedly shot dead during a robbery in April 2024 before their bodies were found dumped at the bottom of a well.

Martin and Debra Robinson made the trip from Perth to the port city of Ensenada for day one of the trial of the three accused killers, saying they want answers.

“We want to find out why it happened,” Martin told 7NEWS before proceedings began.

“We may never find out why but we hope that it will fill in some of the blanks in what we do know already.”

Debra said their journey to Mexico is something Callum and younger sibling Jake would have wanted them to do.

In a last-minute twist in court on Monday, the judge assigned to the case had to pull out and his replacement could not make it in person so they presided over the hearing virtually.

The defendants were also removed from the courtroom when two witnesses were allegedly intimidated by people connected to the accused.

The brothers and their friend had visited Mexico to camp and surf, but family became concerned when they stopped making contact.

Prosecutors allege they were shot dead during during a robbery, with their attackers wanting mobile phones and the tyres off their truck.

Their bodies were found dumped down a remote well on Mexico’s west coast, and their vehicle was torched.

The ex-girlfriend of one of the three accused was sentenced to 20 years in prison over the incident in 2025.

The trio’s deaths sparked an international outpouring of grief.

Callum had played lacrosse in the US and his brother was a doctor about to begin a new job in Geelong.

Rhoad was just a few months from getting married.

The trial — which is expected to run for four weeks — continues.
