{"id":10495,"date":"2026-05-13T09:31:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T09:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/10495\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T09:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T09:31:09","slug":"labor-upgrades-net-migration-numbers-by-55000-in-federal-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/10495\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor upgrades net migration numbers by 55,000 in federal budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Net overseas migration over this year and the next has been upgraded by 55,000, prompting a renewed call from the Coalition and One Nation for migration to be slashed, as Opposition Leader Angus Taylor readies a plan that would rein in migration rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal government expects net overseas migration to be just shy of 1 million more people over four years, including 295,000 this financial year and 245,000 next financial year \u2014 both higher than its previous forecasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That additional population growth will need about 22,000 more homes, based on the average of about 2.5 people per dwelling.<\/p>\n<p>Financial yearForecast net overseas migration2024-25305,0002025-26295,0002026-27245,0002027-28225,0002028-29225,000<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The lift in migration comes ahead of an expected plan to be announced by Opposition Leader Angus Taylor that would crack down on migration and ensure it does not outpace housing growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Coalition has been foreshadowing its plan to rein in migration and fend off a One Nation campaign bleeding votes from the Liberals and Nationals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-13\/federal-budget-2026-live-chalmers-albanese-may-13\/106673062\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106673062\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal budget 2026<\/a>: Stay up to date with the budget aftermath in our live blog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Housing Institute of Australia said with the housing market still too tight and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-12\/budget-2026-government-breaks-promise-negative-gearing-cgt\/106669860\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106669860\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restrictions to negative gearing and capital gains<\/a> tax forecast to lead to 35,000 fewer homes being built over the next 10 years, numbers were heading in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As population growth continues and housing demand remains elevated, the industry needs policy settings that align investment incentives with supply objectives, not work against them,&#8221; managing director Jocelyn Martin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor&#8217;s other investments in housing in this budget will add 65,000 new homes, with the budget expecting a net increase of 30,000 homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume said the government had repeatedly missed its migration targets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That excessive migration is causing problems with housing. It&#8217;s causing problems in our health care system. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both parties are linking migration to Australia&#8217;s housing woes, with the Coalition arguing that the nation&#8217;s migration settings should be tied to housing construction rates to ensure immigration does not outpace housing growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While migration temporarily spiked after international borders reopened following the COVID-19 pandemic, migration rates have settled to near or just above the pre-COVID rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The problem is over that time housing construction collapsed, failing to keep pace with population growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-14\/angus-taylor-coalition-migration-policy-plan-australian-values\/106563718\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor&#8217;s migration plan faces practical questions<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Coalition&#8217;s new migration policy aims to increase screening of visa applicants and &#8220;boot out&#8221; people who do not abide by Australia&#8217;s values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, One Nation is campaigning to slash migration rates and deport 75,000 visa overstayers currently fighting deportation in the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One Nation leader Pauline Hanson said she supported targeted migration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But she said the country could not sustain the current pace of immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My policy is not anti-immigration, it is a control to mass migration. We still have a policy of 130,000 people coming in &#8230; we&#8217;re not anti-immigration.
