{"id":10582,"date":"2026-05-13T13:53:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T13:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/10582\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T13:53:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T13:53:17","slug":"blast-furnace-worries-grow-as-whyalla-steelworks-remains-fiscal-risk-to-federal-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/10582\/","title":{"rendered":"Blast furnace worries grow as Whyalla steelworks remains &#8216;fiscal risk&#8217; to federal budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal government&#8217;s hundreds of millions of dollars in support for the Whyalla steelworks remains a &#8220;fiscal risk&#8221;, according to the budget papers, as the state government warns it may need extra funds if the plant&#8217;s struggling blast furnace permanently shuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The budget papers <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-12\/federal-budget-2026-tax-break-for-millions-of-workers\/106669972\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106669972\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">handed down on Tuesday<\/a> revealed the federal government had committed a total of $409 million in 2025\/26 and 2026\/27 to support the steelworks through administration as well as local creditors that remained out of pocket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government, which stripped the steelworks from British industrialist Sanjeev Gupta&#8217;s ownership in February 2025, is hoping a new buyer will take the steelworks out of administration in the second half of this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-08\/sa-premier-maliauskas-whyalla-steelworks-blast-furnace-shut-down\/106658540\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SA premier &#8216;very concerned&#8217; about Whyalla blast furnace<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Whyalla steelworkers are struggling to get the city&#8217;s blast furnace producing iron again, with SA Premier Peter Malinauskas saying he is &#8220;very concerned&#8221; about the situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the federal government&#8217;s support for the facility remained listed as a &#8220;fiscal risk&#8221; in the budget papers \u2014 as it did in last year&#8217;s budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It also comes amid <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-08\/sa-premier-maliauskas-whyalla-steelworks-blast-furnace-shut-down\/106658540\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106658540\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">serious concerns about the steelworks&#8217; aging blast furnace<\/a>, which has been offline since early April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SA Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the total state and federal rescue package for Whyalla remained about $2.6 billion and any extra funding would depend on &#8220;when the sale process is completed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The blast furnace is going through a lot of difficulties,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A worker inspects steel products at the Whyalla steelworks.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/9f998c697ae6facc6b5ddaea4ea7ed57.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A worker inspects steel products at the Whyalla steelworks. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p>No new freight bypass or Tarrkarri funding<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal budget did not contain many revelations for South Australia, with no new funding allocated to the $1 billion Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The project \u2014 which includes a bypass of the Truro township, duplication of the Swanport Bridge near Murray Bridge, and various upgrades between Monarto and the Sturt Highway \u2014 would divert some trucks off the South Eastern Freeway and around Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the state government argued it should be funded 80\/20 by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re sticking to our guns on that,&#8221; Mr Koutsantonis told 891 ABC Adelaide, adding that the federal government had moved to a 60\/40 funding split.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The real benefits are on national resilience and national freight improvements; it allows much larger trucks to go across the country from north to south and east to west.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the Commonwealth government committed 80\/20, we&#8217;d start building as quickly as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal Coalition took an <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-07\/coalition-funding-for-truck-bypass-around-adelaide-hills\/105145300\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105145300\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80\/20 split of the freight bypass project to its unsuccessful 2025 election campaign.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">SA shadow treasurer Ben Hood accused the state government of being &#8220;flat-footed&#8221; on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen billions of dollars go to Victoria to prop up their rail loop,&#8221; Mr Hood said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Yet here in South Australia, Tom Koutsantonis and [Premier] Peter Malinauskas, have not been able to kick heads in parliament federally \u2026 to ensure that we do get the funding for that Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Koutsantonis did not criticise the budget or SA&#8217;s share of spending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He pointed to the federal government&#8217;s existing <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-15\/down-payment-for-30b-adelaide-submarine-shipyard\/106346484\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106346484\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$30 billion commitment to the AUKUS submarine shipyard at Osborne<\/a> and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-12\/how-the-north-south-corridor-is-changing-adelaide\/105237136\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105237136\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$7.7 billion for the final stage of the North-South Corridor road project.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re in no position to be asking for more money now because we&#8217;ve got to get through this,&#8221;
