Surf Life Saving Club refurbishments to be complete this year

Works to upgrade the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club facilities are set to begin this year, with changeroom refurbishments scheduled for completion before summer.

The project will involve demolishing the changerooms and building new facilities.

The City of Joondalup is expected to award a $642,577 contract to Yanchep-based Hickey Constructions Pty Ltd for the works, with the total project budget set at $860,000.

The upgrades are part of the city’s ongoing capital works program and are being treated as a standalone project, separate to future proposed works at the club linked to a $1.2 million State Government election commitment.

The club is hoping the upgrade will meet growing demand.

This includes relocating the existing gym from downstairs to free up space for more storage and reconfiguring storage spaces throughout the club.

It also proposes an extension to the southern end of the building to accommodate a new gym and kitchen.

The Mullaloo SLSC was established in 1961 and has around 2300 members and provides more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service on the beach and in the water each year.

Last year, the club indicated it would like to undertake both upgrade projects in a $2m “one-hit” redevelopment, but that now appears unlikely.

Joondalup mayor Daniel Kingston said the city was still working with the club and the State Government on the other potential upgrades, which will need to come back to the council for approval before any work begins.

“The refurbishment of these changerooms stands on its own, and the city has kept the project moving so the community does not face unnecessary delays,” Mr Kingston said.

“At the same time, the city is working closely with the club and the State Government to assess the broader election commitment and develop a project plan relating to the Mullaloo SLSC facility.

“This includes determining the project scope, funding requirements and delivery timeframes.”

Pending council approval and contract agreements, construction on the new changerooms is expected to be delivered throughout this year and to be completed prior to summer.

The Joondalup council is set to consider the tender recommendation for Hickey Constructions for the Mullaloo SLSC changeroom refurbishment at its May 26 meeting.

The local construction company has been involved a range of projects, including the new Heath Park Pavilion, Yanchep Beach Club, and Yanchep Lagoon Cafe.

Works to upgrade
