{"id":11023,"date":"2026-05-14T05:03:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T05:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/11023\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T05:03:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T05:03:12","slug":"tensions-grow-as-brisbane-metro-expansion-set-to-stall-due-to-lack-of-federal-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/11023\/","title":{"rendered":"Tensions grow as Brisbane Metro expansion set to stall due to lack of federal funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fears have started growing that recently touted expansions to the Brisbane Metro project won\u2019t be complete before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says the Metro rapid bus network won\u2019t grow into outer suburbs without federal funding, with a leaked document obtained by the Sydney Morning Herald suggesting the expansion most likely won\u2019t be done before 2032.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can absolutely say that without federal funding, there will be no extension of Brisbane Metro, that\u2019s a certainty,\u201d Schrinner said in a press conference yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrisbane City Council shouldn\u2019t be expected to pay for a Metro expansion to Logan or to Redlands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This comes after the federal government last allocated an extra $50 million to the Brisbane Metro\u2019s expansion into the northern suburbs in February 2025, taking the government\u2019s total contribution to the project past $400 million.<\/p>\n<p>The funding at the time allowed Schrinner to announce planned Metro expansions to Carseldine, Capalaba, Springwood and to Brisbane Airport.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.busnews.com.au\/newsletter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Subscribe<\/a>\u00a0to our free weekly newsletter to receive the latest news and classifieds from Australasia\u2019s bus and coach industry<br \/>\nDon\u2019t miss a second and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.busnews.com.au\/subscribe-to-australasian-bus-and-coach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">subscribe<\/a>\u00a0to our monthly ABC magazine<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane City Council opposition leader Jared Cassidy says this news marks a \u201ctransport planning disaster for Brisbane\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wheels have fallen off the metro. It now seems that the LNP Council and LNP state government are going to deliver no new public transport infrastructure ahead of the Brisbane Olympics,\u201d Cassidy says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were promised that the games would fast-track the public transport we need as a growing city. But instead it\u2019s delaying it. I warned about this months and years ago even.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe priority must now be on boosting bus services to fill this massive gap.
