Under the Emirati&#8217;s criminal code, &#8220;sodomy&#8221; and &#8220;sexual intercourse&#8221; between people of the same sex carries a penalty of up to seven years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>On X, cricket commentator and ABC producer Darren Parkin labelled the Swans&#8217; move as &#8220;hypocrisy on a nuclear level&#8221;, while former Victorian Labor MP Philip Dalidakis said it was &#8220;performative BS&#8221; and an &#8220;own goal&#8221;. National Correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age Rob Harris also made light of the hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Sydney Swans website had prominent branding from Qatar Airways.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1326925b8dca754eecb069ecf62e06a5db20c97b.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">The Sydney Swans website had prominent branding from Qatar Airways.\u00a0Sydney Swans<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, a Swans spokesperson said the Qatar partnership &#8220;ended naturally&#8221; at the end of last season, and the club took &#8220;a range of factors&#8221; into consideration before signing fresh corporate deals. The club also did not accept the optics of the Virgin deal could be considered poor.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, football legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/football\/fifa-world-cup-2022-david-beckham-qatar-deal-gay-rights-advocate-backlash-craig-foster-exclusive-20221119-p5j2gf.html\" class=\"sc-ePsPkF eDnLTB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Beckham came under fire for accepting a role as an ambassador for the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar<\/a> that year. Beckham was viewed as a strong ally within the LGBTIQA+ community, but was subsequently ostracised for taking the role, for which he was reportedly paid up to $25 million.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking over from Qatar, Virgin Australia branding has appeared in the goal square at Swans home games at the SCG as well as digital billboards around the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The Swans have held a Pride Game at the SCG annually since 2016 &#8211; the same year it launched the partnership with Qatar, which included prominent Qatar branding at SCG home games, as well as the Swans website.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Swans players warm up during the opening round AFL match between Sydney Swans and Carlton Blues at SCG on March 05, 2026 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Jason McCawley\/Getty Images)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4e3b807d0492842b210218d8123ac6027d39b51e.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Virgin Australia has prominent branding during Swans home games at the SCG.\u00a0Getty<\/p>\n<p>The Swans are also prominent within the LGBTIQA+ community, and have a large presence at the annual Mardi Gras parade in Sydney, organised by the club&#8217;s Rainbow Swans group.<\/p>\n<p>The Swans spokesperson said the club worked closely with the Rainbow Swans &#8220;on a range of topics, including our Pride Game&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Collard was hit with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/afl\/news-2026-st-kilda-saints-vfl-lance-collard-alleged-homophobic-slur-frankston-investigation-20260328-p5zjj9.html\" class=\"sc-ePsPkF eDnLTB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lengthy nine-game ban that was later reduced to two weeks<\/a> following an investigation into his use of homophobic slurs during a VFL game.<\/p>\n<p>The Saints supported their young player throughout the investigation and lengthy tribunal hearings.
