A woman aged in her 70s has died and a 51-year-old man has been arrested after police responded to reports of a man stabbing a relative in Canberra’s inner north.<\/p>\n

Family and domestic violence support services:<\/p>\n

Emergency services were called to the Dryandra Street residence in O’Connor just before 9am, with paramedics treating the woman for critical injuries at the scene before taking her to hospital.<\/p>\n

Police said the woman was declared dead while being transported.<\/p>\n

A man in his 70s was also injured in the incident and is in a stable condition in hospital.<\/p>\n

Police said they arrested a 51-year-old man at the scene before taking him to hospital under police guard.<\/p>\n

Weapon still missing, police say\"A<\/p>\n

Detective Acting Inspector Chris Watson from ACT Policing’s Homicide Squad said officers were still looking for a weapon after attending the “confronting” scene.<\/p>\n

A large area near the property remains cordoned off.<\/p>\n

“That’s to protect the integrity of the scene at the moment There’s a lot of through traffic and we’re just preventing any contamination,” Detective Acting Inspector Watson said.<\/p>\n

He said the 51-year-old man was a relative of the woman, but Detective Acting Inspector Watson said he could not further clarify the relationship, “as not all family members are aware of what’s occurred”.<\/p>\n

Police said charges could be laid overnight.<\/p>\n
