(ABC News: Luke Bowden)

It is rare for the leader of a Queensland political party to be found in contempt of parliament.

The last occasion involved then premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in 2021, who was found in contempt over threats to strip Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) MPs of staffing resources.

Following the finding, Mr Bleijie claimed Mr Miles was “not fit to be leader of the opposition”.

“Don’t underestimate how extraordinary and serious this is. Steven Miles has lied to parliament deliberately,” he said.

“He had information, he knew the information was wrong, he proceeded to say the information.”

The parliament voted to find Mr Miles in contempt.

Deputy opposition leader Cameron Dick told the House the government had “failed to uphold the high standard of ministerial office” and stood behind the Labor leader.

He noted the finding of contempt had been made by a majority decision of the committee, rather than unanimously.

“Which again, is another breach of the standards and norms of the parliament that we have not seen for a long time,” he told parliament.

“The members of the opposition and all Labor members stand united behind our leader because he is essentially a man of decency and integrity.”

First apology deemed insufficient

Mr Miles claimed in parliament in February 2025 that Mr Bleijie had not disclosed a Sunshine Coast property to constituents during the 2024 state election.

The deputy premier noted the home had been declared on his register of interests since 2021, labelling the opposition leader’s statements “deliberate and malicious”.

Mr Miles apologised to parliament in April 2025, but Mr Bleijie took issue with it.

“I believe the explanation by the Member for Murrumba to the House yesterday was not sufficient and represents an affront to the House in that the apology itself was qualified, disingenuous and contained additional misleading claims,” the deputy premier said.

Annastacia Palaszczuk was found in contempt of parliament in 2022 over threats to strip Katter’s Australia Party of staffing resources. (AAP: Jono Searle)

Mr Miles argued the matter was dealt with by his first apology.

However, the committee disagreed, stating it was arguable he “simply re-prosecuted the argument by stating his contribution was misunderstood”.

“This suggests that the apology and retraction may not have been unreserved and unequivocal.”

Mr Dick and shadow industrial minister Grace Grace were also referred to the committee over comments made in parliament about Mr Bleijie’s property.

No findings were made against them.

Opposition Leader Steven Miles has apologised after he was found in contempt over deliberately misleading Queensland parliament. The…

[2
5800,22,21,12213,12212,4900,149,211,212,12211,1072,11547
post-11345","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-apology","tag-au","tag-austrlia","tag-contempt","tag-contempt-of-house","tag-jarrod-bleijie","tag-politics","tag-qld","tag-queensland","tag-state-parliament","tag-state-politics","tag-steven-miles
["GET
