{"id":11408,"date":"2026-05-14T13:32:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T13:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/11408\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T13:32:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T13:32:11","slug":"one-nation-wedged-greens-steamrolled-in-sa-labors-two-front-environmental-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/11408\/","title":{"rendered":"One Nation wedged, Greens steamrolled in SA Labor&#8217;s two-front environmental battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since One Nation&#8217;s breakthrough state election result in South Australia this year, Premier Peter Malinauskas has been striking a seemingly diplomatic tone about parliament&#8217;s new conservative cohort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last Tuesday, as <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-05\/pauline-hanson-promises-hands-off-approach-in-sa\/106642704\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106642704\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Australia&#8217;s seven new One Nation MPs prepared for their first day in parliament<\/a>, the Labor premier said we should &#8220;welcome the fact that there are opposition parties in our state who have an important function to perform to hold us to account&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I stand ready willing and able to work with opposition parties regardless of their political hue, regardless of our political differences, if it&#8217;s in the best interests of the state,&#8221; he said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve communicated that to [One Nation SA leader] Cory [Bernardi] directly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">High-minded civics, sure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A sign that Labor will make One Nation&#8217;s life easy in parliament? (Facebook: Jason Virgo for MacKillop)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The South East MP has just been put into a political bind by the government&#8217;s<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-14\/sa-set-to-remove-ban-on-fracking-in-the-south-east\/106677484\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106677484\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> push to end the moratorium on fracking in his local electorate.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 10-year ban was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-09-05\/liberals-to-legislate-se-fracking-moratorium\/10203578\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/10203578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legislated by the former Marshall Liberal government in 2018<\/a> in response to community fears the gas extraction method would threaten groundwater and local agriculture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those community concerns have not dissipated, but neither has One Nation&#8217;s zest for resource extraction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last month national One Nation party leader Pauline Hanson was spruiking &#8220;drill, baby, drill&#8221; on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It leaves One Nation having to balance its traditional views with those of Mr Virgo&#8217;s constituents.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Malinauskas shakes the hand of Robert Roylance as David Paton and other pollies look on\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1c3b28884f288eef3d0fd468ea54391c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Peter Malinauskas (right) greets One Nation&#8217;s new MPs on the first day of parliament. (ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor, which argues ending the moratorium can be done safely and is necessary to shore up gas supplies in the 2030s, will accuse One Nation and the Liberals of being energy hypocrites if they keep the moratorium in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Liberal Party and One Nation talk a big game when it comes to energy sovereignty and security \u2014 well, now they have an opportunity to prove it,&#8221; Mr Malinauskas said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Instead, I fear they may hide behind the veil of confrontation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the level of community angst will be hard for Mr Virgo to ignore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Naracoorte-Lucindale Mayor Patrick Ross said his &#8220;jaw dropped&#8221; when he heard the government&#8217;s plan, and he is already making his views known to the fledgling One Nation MP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve made it very clear, and I know that other mayors in the seat of MacKillop have made it very clear, that first and foremost you must represent your constituents,&#8221; Mr Ross said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Patrick Ross at a community event.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/26a8806f7a00b26f5c6033bd2f664e57.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Patrick Ross says &#8220;fracking is a no go&#8221;.\u00a0 (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter where the party may sit [or] One Nation may sit on resources extraction, you must support the people who put you into the parliament, and that is the constituents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And they will be very loud and clear to Jason Virgo that fracking is a no-go for MacKillop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An attempt at the middle path<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Virgo has already tried to find middle ground through the issue, calling for local consultation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a rare interview with 891 ABC Adelaide today, he said the moratorium was ending in 2028 so &#8220;there&#8217;s no need to push it through today or next week&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-03\/one-nation-jason-virgo-australian-sex-party-sa\/106516010\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Nation&#8217;s Jason Virgo<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sixteen years before Jason Virgo won the SA seat of MacKillop for One Nation in the state&#8217;s south-east, he twice ran for parliament as an Australian Sex Party candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our community down here really wanted the country cabinet to come down and listen to the concerns that are facing our region, and instead what we&#8217;ve had is a bit of a slap in the face,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Virgo, who rejected that he was trying to walk on both sides of the street, said the eastern states should play a bigger role in gas extraction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Gas security is important and there is plenty of the state to drill for gas, we absolutely want gas,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But what I would suggest is that the Labor premier needs to get onto his Labor mates in the eastern states and get them to start drilling their fair share.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Liberal MLC Ben Hood, from Mount Gambier, made a similar call for consultation, while federal Liberal MP Tony Pasin told the premier to &#8220;frack off&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A second environmental battle<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There are risks for Labor, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ministers could face some fiery criticism as they try to explain their decision at a country cabinet forum in the South East tonight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The move also draws attention to Labor&#8217;s previous comments that it <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-03-04\/labor-denies-change-to-fracking-moratorium-mount-gambier-forum\/100881458\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100881458\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would not touch the fracking moratorium before 2028.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">New independent Mount Gambier MP Travis Fatchen has already vowed to fight the proposal &#8220;every step of the way&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Before the election in 2022, the premier gave a clear assurance to the people of the Limestone Coast that there would be no changes to the moratorium,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That promise has now been broken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Labor does not have much to lose in the South East either; (ABC News: Briana Fiore)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That is the seat of Adelaide, where debate continues to rage over the felling of 585 trees in the park lands for the government&#8217;s $45 million redevelopment of the North Adelaide golf course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Rather than One Nation, this political fight has been with the Greens, with <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-13\/north-adelaide-golf-course-protest-over-felled-trees\/106675756\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106675756\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands gathering on the steps of Parliament House last night to protest the redevelopment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Nothing has put the government off course so far and the trees continue to come down.
