{"id":11896,"date":"2026-05-15T07:32:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/11896\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T07:32:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T07:32:06","slug":"universities-warn-against-coalition-plan-to-cut-foreign-student-numbers-in-migration-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/11896\/","title":{"rendered":"Universities warn against Coalition plan to cut foreign student numbers in migration crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Universities are bracing for foreign student numbers to absorb the bulk of cuts under a Coalition migration plan, with experts warning skilled visas would be difficult to cull.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Coalition has vowed, if elected, to cut back the number of people allowed to move to Australia, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-14\/angus-taylor-ties-migration-cap-to-housing-budget-reply\/106676622\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106676622\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tying net overseas migration (NOM) to the number of houses built.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While steering clear of revealing a specific target, Angus Taylor has said migrant numbers would be capped at 40 per cent of the current intake, and &#8220;well under 200,000&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That would mean reducing the number of people entering the country by at least 100,000, based on current migration forecasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Reaching that target would require cuts to international student numbers and working visa holders, Dr Liz Allen from ANU&#8217;s Centre for Social Policy Research told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re unlikely to cut holiday makers, they can&#8217;t do anything about new Zealanders or Australians, they can&#8217;t do anything about returning permanent migrants,&#8221; Dr Allen said if international students were expected to absorb the bulk of the cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Then there are flow-on impacts, if you cut students then [the Coalition would] have to do other things to ensure sectors don&#8217;t collapse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Education is among Australia&#8217;s top five exports, with the international education sector worth about $55 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Asked whether the number of international students coming to Australia would be cut, Nationals leader Matt Canavan said &#8220;absolutely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of the pipeline of foreign students that are coming to this country are not really coming here to study. Mr Sheehy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;International education is one of Australia&#8217;s great success stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It supports and creates jobs, builds lasting international ties and contributes $55 billion to the economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Allen said students had a smaller impact on housing take-up than other groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Universities are required to provide housing if they want to accept more students than their allocated limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the government already linked certain migration numbers to housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There is an area where we very directly link migration numbers to housing, and that&#8217;s with respect to overseas students and student housing for institutions,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Labor has previously used a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-12-19\/international-student-numbers-limited-using-caps-workaround\/104744304\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104744304\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;go-slow&#8221; method to suppress student numbers, where visa application processing was slowed down once applications reach a target for each university<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Push, pull expected on worker numbers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Beyond students, Dr Allen said workers were the next obvious target to restrict, but she warned that could be fraught.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You&#8217;re unlikely to be able to effectively control NOM in a way it won&#8217;t have a net adverse flow on,&#8221; Angus Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Then we&#8217;ve got to have a migration program that is focused on the skills we need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Shadow housing minister Andrew Bragg provided more detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We need 80,000 more tradies to build the houses that Australians want to live in and last year we only got 4,000 tradies in on visas,&#8221;
