(ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Burke linked Neo-Nazis to &#8220;violent action&#8221; in Melbourne and said there had been several arrests relating to people &#8220;motivated by white supremacist ideology&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">South Australian police arrested 16 alleged Neo-Nazis, including one person who was charged with displaying a Nazi symbol, after they disrupted a Survival Day rally in Adelaide last January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Three people were also arrested after a group of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-10\/thomas-sewell-neo-nazi-camp-sovereignty-melbourne-court\/106326988\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106326988\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alleged Neo-Nazis attacked a First Nations protest camp<\/a> in Melbourne in September.<\/p>\n<p>Ban will limit &#8216;horrific, bigoted rallies&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Burke said the federal government could not stop &#8220;bigoted people from having horrific ideologies,&#8221; but banning certain groups would have an impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It does prevent this group from organising, meeting and prevent some of the sorts of horrific, bigoted rallies we have seen around the country,&#8221; even if they did not realise who was behind the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The criminal threshold will be determined on the facts, but the simple thing would be if anyone who associated with any organisation of this nature, they&#8217;re taking a risk \u2026 and they need to be aware of the potential criminal offences that they&#8217;d be dealing with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Burke said the Neo-Nazis had &#8220;gone after almost every different group you can imagine&#8221; in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Whether people are Jewish, Muslim, whether people are of Asian heritage, whether they are First Nations, they engaged in a series of examples of bigotry, all of which fit with their white supremacist ideology,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It has been made clear today that under Australian law they are now a banned organisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Neo-Nazis can&#8217;t avoid ban by changing name<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When Labor first announced laws intended to capture groups described by intelligence agencies as &#8220;lawful but awful,&#8221; the Neo-Nazi group known as NSN announced it would disband to avoid being listed as a hate group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Mr Burke said &#8220;phoenixing&#8221; \u2014 continuing the same activities under a different name \u2014 would be swiftly dealt with by the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Once an organisation has been listed, then if they try to reform under a new name, effectively it&#8217;s a simple regulation change [to list the new name],&#8221; (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Burke said ASIO had initiated the listing on the basis the Neo-Nazi group was &#8220;engaged in behaviour that increase risks of violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The organisation also met the government&#8217;s threshold of advocating for or engaging in &#8220;hate crimes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Coalition backs listing of hate group<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The opposition was briefed on the advice and has supported the listing, with Shadow Home Affairs Minister Jonno Duniam describing it as a &#8220;welcome development&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s be absolutely clear, the modus operandi of these Neo-Nazis is to destroy the Australian way of life,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our message to them is that your ideology of hate has no place in our society and that if your criminal organisation persists, it will be shut down and your members punished.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing a suit and tie sitting in a slightly darkened room.
