(Supplied QIMR: Chen Wu)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Schmidt said genetic analysis could confirm where these particular insects originated from, and if that was connected to illegal foreign fishers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It seems that the original Torres Strait invasion around 2004-2005 was from an Indonesian source, which could have been fishermen,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the &#8220;barbecue stopper&#8221; nickname referred to its aggressive nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Aedes albopictus is known for biting repeatedly, and they&#8217;re very painful bites,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When they&#8217;re about, people tend not to want to go outside.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No risk to public<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">TCHHS acting medical services director Ineke Wever said the detected mosquitoes did not carry any virus, but she urged residents to take precautions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"portriat of woman among leaves\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/4d8381a9f4f379a572582d04effa7c14.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ineke Wever says residents can do their part to help control the spread of mosquitoes.
