Contempt proceedings have been launched against Mark Latham after he attacked a tribunal that found he unlawfully vilified and sexually harassed another state MP.<\/p>\n

Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich alleged Mr Latham scandalised the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) in a social media post, calling it “grossly political and incompetent”.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Mr Greenwich asked NCAT to refer the upper house crossbencher to the Supreme Court, which has the power to jail anyone it finds guilty of contempt.<\/p>\n

Mr Latham’s online outburst followed an order to pay Mr Greenwich $100,000 plus costs over a crude tweet in 2023, describing a presumed sexual act of the gay parliamentarian.<\/p>\n

NCAT found the post by the then-leader of One Nation in NSW could incite Mr Latham’s Twitter followers to hate Mr Greenwich because of his sexuality.<\/p>\n

It also found Mr Latham’s tweets and subsequent media comments constituted unlawful sexual harassment at the workplace, which it said extended to the airwaves and social media.<\/p>\n

In an X post responding to the decision, Mr Latham, who once led federal Labor, vowed to appeal what he called a “woke, left-wing political judgement.”<\/p>\n

The independent MLC claimed, without evidence, that one of the tribunal members was a “prominent transgender activist” and “straight from the Greenwich school of Alphabet Politics”.<\/p>\n

“NCAT should be embarrassed and ashamed by what has happened in its grossly political and incompetent handling of this matter, at every level,” Mr Latham wrote.<\/p>\n

The former One Nation MP has been found to have vilified openly gay politician Alex Greenwich in the second case centring around a dispute between the pair.<\/p>\n

In a document filed with the tribunal, Mr Greenwich’s lawyers alleged the post appeared to lower the authority of NCAT and “excites misgivings as to the integrity, propriety and impartiality” of the body.<\/p>\n

“The 30 April post denigrates members of the Tribunal, denigrates the Tribunal itself and undermines the public’s confidence in the administration of justice,” they wrote.<\/p>\n

Mr Greenwich’s lawyers initially wrote to Mr Latham and asked him to delete the post.<\/p>\n

The letter prompted Mr Latham to fire off another post on X.<\/p>\n

“In the great tradition of PJ Keating, I have now wiped my arse with [the letter] and hung it on the back of the toilet door,” Mr Latham wrote.<\/p>\n

“I do not surrender to AA: Alphabet Authoritarianism and its constant threats of lawfare, nor the transgender activists calling themselves NCAT.”<\/p>\n

Both Mr Greenwich and Mr Latham declined to comment.<\/p>\n

Mr Latham is awaiting the outcome of his appeal in separate proceedings stemming from the same 2023 tweet.<\/p>\n
