It’s just a start though,” skipper Max Gawn said post-match.

While it’s joy for the Dees, questions are now being asked of Hawthorn’s “ridiculously tall” attack and the dependence on veterans Tom Barrass and Jack Gunston who missed the defeat through injury.

Missed targets and low efficiency cruelled the Hawks throughout the MCG blockbuster, with the side now winless since their Anzac Day victory.

The 3-2-1 … (what we learned) …

3. DEES CLAIM ANOTHER SCALP IN RISE ‘NO ONE SAW COMING’ AS TRADE MOVES PAY HUGE DIVIDENDS

Demons fans might have to cancel those ski trips in September this year!

Narrm took another big scalp on Saturday to improve to 7-3 and continue its undefeated run at the MCG this season.

All of a sudden, Dees fans will be daring to dream about what 2026 could be in a rise under new coach Steven King no one saw coming.

They’ve now defeated Hawthorn, Brisbane and Gold Coast, three of the chief flag contenders.

And they didn’t just beat Hawthorn. A game that was a bit of a coin flip going in was a percentage booster for the red and blue in the end as they owned the Hawks in contested possessions (+11) and clearances (+6).

It just shows the power of what a new coach can do. As well as a bold list overhaul as the departure of premiership stars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver has opened up opportunities for the likes of Tom Sparrow to go to another level.

“I don’t think anyone in footy saw this coming … a 7-3 start to the year,” Demons great Garry Lyon said.

“But there’s players that have lifted to the point that Tom Sparrow now has to be taken seriously as one of the elite midfielders in the competition.

“You don’t get that if the opportunity doesn’t present itself with players moving on.

“It has been remarkable and a credit to both coach and player.”

The Demons are 7-3 under Steven King (Photo by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images)Source: FOX SPORTS

But the Demons’ list management also deserves a ton of recognition.

The additions of Jack Steele, Max Heath, Changkuoth Jiath and Harry Sharp have also plugged holes and paid key dividends to the club’s rise.

“(Sharp) has been a great pickup too. He’s an emergency for the Brisbane Lions in a grand final side, that’s what people forget, he wasn’t just number 36 on their list, he was close enough,” Lyon added.

“He’s the best runner in the football club and now he’s got his role. That hard running, high half forward that gets up and back.

“Credit to the list management team.

“Jack Steele gets introduced to the team, Max Heath comes in and gives them some strength.

“They’ve identified the talent and gone after it really well.

“Big names went out, some fair soldiers have come in.”

2. MASTSTROKE MOVE THAT SET THE STAGE

One end of the MCG was named the ‘Pickett Pocket’.

But it was Harrison Petty’s three-goal cameo up forward that stole the show.

Petty was on fire early as his move forward proved a masterstroke by Steven King and set the stage for a big win.

“No one expected I don’t think Harrison Petty to play forward of the ball given Lewis, Dear, Ramsden, Meek and Reeves but he has,” Garry Lyon said.

Still without Brody Mihocek, Narrm has needed to get creative to retool its front six with a focal point. And Petty was the solution on Saturday.

Harrison Petty kicked three goals (Photo by Morgan Hancock/Getty Images)Source: FOX SPORTS

Petty kicked all three of his goals in the first half — including two in the first quarter — to cause all sorts of headaches in the Hawthorn coaches box.

And took full advantage in stretching an undermanned Hawks defence missing Tom Barrass.

Demons great Garry Lyon said he was “proving a real handful for Josh Weddle” before Josh Battle moved onto him.

Hawks legend Jason Dunstall was full of praise for the move he thinks could be permanent.

“What a win they are having with Harrison Petty as a forward,” Dunstall said.

“He just looks dangerous every time he goes near it.

“I don’t know why he’d ever want to go back (to play as a defender) when he can play like this forward.”

1. SUPERSTAR SHOWDOWN FAILS TO REACH ‘MASSIVE BUILD UP’ AS KOZZY TAG ‘A COMPLIMENT’

There was plenty of focus on Kysaiah Pickett and Nick Watson going into Saturday’s clash.

Either end of the ground was even named the ‘Pickett Pockett’ and ‘Wizard Bay’ to celebrate the two stars and premier mid-forwards in the game.

But neither player had a major say on the result, despite kicking five goals between them.

“The build up was massive. Hasn’t quite played out that way,” Demons great Garry Lyon noted during the call.

Pickett was clamped for a second-straight week as Finn Maginness was brought in to lock down the Demons superstar.

“Finn Magginess brought in to do the job on him. Has done a good job,” Hawks great Jason Dunstall said.

Nick Watson and Kysaiah Pickett collide (Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images)Source: FOX SPORTS

Magginess held Pickett to a season-low 13 disposals — so a big tick to Sam Mitchell for that, if nothing else — to go with his two goals.

It makes Narrm’s win even more impressive.

Dealing with regular attention is the new reality Pickett faces amid his superstar ascension.

Despite his down showing, Pickett said post-match you “take it as a compliment when you get tagged.”

At the other end of the ground, Watson wasn’t quite at his blistering best either.

Playing as a stay-at-home-forward without Jack Gunston, Watson kicked an equal game-high three goals. But he didn’t have the big energetic moments that so often can lift the Hawks.

There was a fun moment between the two in the fourth quarter, where Pickett caught Watson with a crunching tackle for holding the ball inside Hawthorn’s forward 50.

Lyon called it “symbolism of the afternoon” and a “big moment” as even the ‘Wizard’ couldn’t sprinkle his usual magic at the MCG.

Re-live the Dees-Hawks in our live blog below!

Narrm has turned the MCG into a fortress once more with a 39-point win over Hawthorn on Saturday.…

[4
7386,23,133,1429,531,8842,1458,368,6850,11946,6534,4638,3945,3948,260,262,120,11959,11969,68
0":"post-12505","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-melbourne","8":"tag-adam-simpson","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-australia-and-new-zealand","11":"tag-bayley-fritsch","12":"tag-ben-cotton","13":"tag-catherine-healey","14":"tag-coaching-job","15":"tag-getty-images-inc","16":"tag-hawthorn-hawks","17":"tag-jack-gunston","18":"tag-john-longmire","19":"tag-josh-chadwick","20":"tag-live-updates","21":"tag-match-details","22":"tag-melbourne","23":"tag-melbourne-demons","24":"tag-oceania","25":"tag-rumours-linking","26":"tag-tom-barrass","27":"tag-victoria
["GET
