Melville\u2019s Blue Gum Community Centre has reopened after more than a year of major renovations.<\/p>\n
The $3.7 million refurbishments include new flooring, reconfiguring lobby areas to improve passive surveillance for child safety, new accessible ramps, a larger staff room, new cr\u00e8che areas and car park upgrades.<\/p>\n
The centre was originally built in 1984 for basketball and badminton, but a growing demand for school and extracurricular programs in Melville meant the space needed to be modernised for greater flexibility.<\/p>\n
Melville mayor Katy Mair attended the reopening ceremony last Monday alongside fellow councillors, chief executive officer Gail Bowman and Federal Tangney MP Sam Lim.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur residents deserve accessible and inviting facilities to enable them to build and maintain connections at every stage of life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaintaining our community facilities and delivering refurbishments like these ensures we can continue to support our community in maintaining a healthy and connected lifestyle.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s great to see the upgraded facilities already being enjoyed by the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The multi-million-dollar project received $13,000 via a Federal Government grant, which supported a public access computer room and entry artwork from First Nations artists.<\/p>\n
It is part of the council\u2019s Plan for the Future 2024-2034, which is focused on building a diverse community by delivering more inclusive multipurpose spaces that facilitate wellbeing.<\/p>\n
The centre is currently used by board game groups, and for table tennis and friendly rounds of Mahjong. It has kitchen facilities, a functions room and a large open sports court for hire.<\/p>\n
The redesign ensured all amenities were brought up to compliance standards, and increased accessibility throughout the building to support a broad range of activities and meet evolving community needs.<\/p>\n
