{"id":1306,"date":"2026-04-29T08:10:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T08:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/1306\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T08:10:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T08:10:10","slug":"indian-born-residents-make-up-australias-largest-foreign-born-population-for-first-time-nudging-out-the-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/1306\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian-born residents make up Australia&#8217;s largest foreign-born population for first time, nudging out the English"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>India has narrowly overtaken England as Australia\u2019s largest estimated foreign-born resident group for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Wednesday revealed Indian-born people numbered an estimated 971,020 as at June 30, 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>English-born residents\u00a0were estimated to number 970,950\u00a0in June last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The year prior, English-born residents led those born in India 963,560 to\u00a0916,330\u00a0respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Indian-born population has seen the largest increase in the population since 2015, while those born in England have slowly declined.<\/p>\n<p>Historical population data records show England had consistently formed the largest single cohort of foreign-born residents at any one time, at least since 1901.<\/p>\n<p>As of June 2025, the ABS\u00a0estimated some 731,540 Chinese-born migrants were\u00a0residing\u00a0in Australia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They made up the second-fastest growing population group.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kiwis remained in fourth place,\u00a0comprising\u00a02.3 per cent of the estimated resident population \u2013 637,680.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The next largest foreign-born populations were the Philippines, Vietnam, South Africa, Nepal, Sri\u00a0Lanka\u00a0and Malaysia in descending order.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The data showed those born and living in Australia numbered 18.8 million in 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same reporting period, Australia homed 8.8 million foreign-born resident \u2013 about 32 per cent of the total Estimated Resident Population of 27.6 million.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of overseas-born people in Australia has been approaching the highest on record, which was 32.4 per cent in 1891.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The median age for Australia\u2019s overseas-born population was 43, marginally down from 46 years in 2005.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe median age of those born overseas has fluctuated over time, peaking at a median of 46 years in 2002 and decreasing to 44 years in 2019,\u201d the ABS said in its release on Wednesday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the decrease in younger people (such as international students) migrating to Australia, the median age of the overseas-born population increased to 45 years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the Australian-born population\u00a0the median age\u00a0was 35, up from 33 in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>People born in\u00a0Italy and England had\u00a0the largest decreases in their populations since 2015.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both groups had\u00a0median ages\u00a0over 60, reflecting the\u00a0high levels\u00a0of migration to Australia\u00a0from these countries after World War II, the ABS noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lowest median aged group of residents was those from Qatar.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Australia ranks eighth internationally for foreign-born residents, according to global estimates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The USA had the most international migrants in its population in 2024, with 52.4 million migrants accounting for 15 per cent of the country\u2019s population.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Germany was the\u00a0second-highest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>16.8 million people born overseas resided in the nation and accounted for 19.8 per cent of its population.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia ranked third, with 13.7 million migrants comprising 31.5 per cent of its total population in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"India has narrowly overtaken England as Australia\u2019s largest estimated foreign-born resident group for the first time.
