MORE IN TRADE WHISPERS.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779151756_164_poster-fallback.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>GIANTS LAUNCH BID TO RETAIN GREENE<\/p>\n<p>GWS has tabled a three-year, $2 million deal to Toby Greene, but won\u2019t go higher given the need to retain their stars set to enter 2027 free agency.<\/p>\n<p>It comes amid speculation Greene, an unrestricted free agent, could pursue a move back to Victoria and links to Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>The Giants skipper, who turns 33 in September, admitted he\u2019d be keen to return to Melbourne at some point but said he and his family are currently settled in Sydney. <\/p>\n<p>Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph revealed that Victorian clubs will be able to trump GWS\u2019 offer, which the Giants are unlikely to budge on given they need funds to retain their gun 2027 free agents including Tom Green and Lachie Ash.<\/p>\n<p>Scott grilled on 2026 win-loss ratio | 04:03<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Giants have offered Toby Greene a $2 million deal over three years in a bid to retain the 33-year old as a one-club player and their captain,\u201d Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy\u2019s On the Couch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re fully aware that Melbourne rivals will offer more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut their belief is if they bend on that offer and increase it, they\u2019ll potentially lose one of their 2027 free agents in Lachie Ash and Tom Green.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby will get more at a Victorian club but he wants to win a flag, he\u2019ll only go to a Victorian club in the window. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the next three years, that\u2019s probably only Geelong and Hawthorn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Giants rate their 21 to 25 year olds, they think they will extend the current premiership window. Brisbane is very keen again on him,\u201d Ralph said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly two games before breaking down with a fresh calf injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Suns have inquired about Merrett some seven months on from his failed move to Hawthorn. <\/p>\n<p>And though Merrett isn\u2019t believed to be keen on a move north, there\u2019s an expectation that the ex-Bombers skipper, contracted until 2027, will again explore a trade. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold Coast has asked the question of Zach Merrett,\u201d Ralph added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not interested in moving north, but I think everyone would expect he will try to be on the move again at the end of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"GWS has made its big play to retain Toby Greene amid conjecture around his future.
