Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a double fatality in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s south-east, early this morning.<\/p>\n

Police say a car was travelling along the Princes Highway when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree on the centre median strip about 1:20am.<\/p>\n

The car then burst into flames, killing the driver and a passenger.<\/p>\n

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy said local police were in the area at the time and were the first to come across the scene.<\/p>\n

“Two males have lost their life,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We’re still trying to identify who those males are.”<\/p>\n

He said police were yet to confirm the ages of the deceased.<\/p>\n

Footage from the scene shows a crumpled silver-coloured car on the side of the road near the intersection of the highway and James Street.<\/p>\n

Inspector McEvoy said debris was scattered across a large area, with a front tyre found around 100 metres from the crash site on the opposite side of the road.<\/p>\n

He said detectives believed the car had been speeding.<\/p>\n

The crash happened out the front of Dandenong High School.<\/p>\n

“We’re also engaging with the Department of Education to ensure they’re aware of the circumstances,” Inspector McEvoy said.<\/p>\n

“They’ll put all the care they can around the school kids to make sure they’re exposure is reduced as best we can.”<\/p>\n

Police say there will be traffic disruptions through the morning with the Princes Highway closed in both directions. (ABC News)<\/p>\n

He said police did not believe the car had been stolen.<\/p>\n

The Princes Highway is expected to be closed for most of this morning while investigations continue.<\/p>\n

Police warned of traffic disruptions in both directions between Robinson and Potter streets.<\/p>\n

Detectives were still trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.<\/p>\n
