{"id":14773,"date":"2026-05-20T04:36:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T04:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/14773\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T04:36:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T04:36:25","slug":"queensland-drivers-urged-to-slow-down-near-tow-trucks-after-spike-in-roadside-near-misses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/14773\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland drivers urged to slow down near tow trucks after spike in roadside near misses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Motorists across Queensland are being urged to slow down around emergency service vehicles and tow trucks responding to incidents, after a reported rise in near misses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The calls come on the third day of National Road Safety Week, and amid another deadly year on the state&#8217;s roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) has warned roadside hits could become more common \u2014 especially for their crews and emergency services \u2014 unless motorists slow down around incidents.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A highway blocked off with emergency responders\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2da1d0fc4acff2dca327cf8b512fce40.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A woman died earlier this week after she was hit by a ute when returning to her car on the side of the M1.\u00a0 (Supplied: Aussie Towing)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The organisation said in the six months between November 2025 and April 2026 there were 29 near misses involving their tow trucks assisting vehicles \u2014 more than triple the number during the same period the previous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">RACQ Deputy Chief Executive Glenn Toms said Queensland law meant if drivers saw flashing lights on the roadside they had to legally move over and slow down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">\u00a0&#8220;Roadside operators \u2026 are there to help when you need it most \u2014 the least motorists can do is move over and slow down,&#8221; Mr Toms said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They are out there saving Queenslanders every day from dangerous and vulnerable situations \u2014 we can&#8217;t have motorists making these situations worse by not following their obligations to give them safe space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The law is simple \u2014 if you see flashing lights on the roadside, move over and slow down.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Blue letters spelling RACQ at the top of a white building.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6ed05495ffcd978c8adf61c90926e8f1.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">RACQ wants drivers to slow down.\u00a0 (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Toms said it was &#8220;disappointing&#8221; to see road safety go backwards after the organisation campaigned for those laws \u2014 dubbed the Move Over, Slow Down laws \u2014 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">So far this year, 125 people have died on Queensland roads \u2014 an increase of almost 30 per cent on numbers to the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On that trajectory, the RACQ has warned 330 people could die this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">\u00a0&#8220;Queensland is on track for another one of its deadliest years in recent history, and these incidents show the risks aren&#8217;t limited to drivers and passengers \u2014 they extend to the people working to keep our motorists safe and our roads moving,&#8221; Mr Toms said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every one of these close calls could have ended in tragedy.
